Beauty secret: DIY protein hair mask

It’s no secret that collagen does wonders for hair and skin. So how can you use collagen to improve the quality of your hair nice, easy and simple? 

Make a homemade hair mask using gelatin, from the supermarket. And yes, for you vegans, sorry this stuff is made from animal bones.

The protein from this hair mask comes from two super nutritious sources: egg and collagen.

This hair mask will make your hair soft, shiny, and infuse it with more life, or zah-zah-zoo. Salons call a treatment like this “lamination” or and intensive conditioning repair treatment. I call it awesome and think at least once a year, very necessary. Who wants frizzy dry dull boring hair? We want lustrous, shiny…. gorgeous. Right? Keep reading. 

Here are the ingredients for this homemade hair mask: 

1/4 cup coconut milk

8 g unflavored gelatin

One fresh free range egg

Half teaspoon olive oil

I chose to make my own coconut milk from shredded unsweetened coconut. If you want to do the same you will have to blend your shredded coconut with hot water and then strain. If you don’t want to go through that process simply use a can of coconut milk… Just the water part, reserve the cream to make a delicious Thai curry or another dish.

Mix these ingredients in a bowl and whisk thoroughly.

This could get messy, so take your bowl into the bathroom and dip/pat/drench your hair in the mask. Then clip it up and stick with it for at least 30 minutes.

Ugh so gross. But be patient. There’s light at the end of this eggy gelatine protein tunnel. 

Rinse out then shampoo and condition the way you would normally. I was really impressed with this hair mask. I felt it made my hair really soft. I also think it gave it a great shine and luminosity that I didn’t have before the mask.


Here’s a tip though: don’t overdo this mask. Too much protein can actually make your hair dry and brittle.
