5 tips for healthy grocery shopping

Grocery stores have more choices than ever these days. But who has time to read all the food labels, decide what is most nutritious and the best deal?

Supermarkets often have specialists to help them design the store to get you to buy more food, not less!

But with a little guidance, healthy choices can be easy to determine. Here are 10 tips:

1. Plan ahead for success:

Take a look at flyers and research  online before you get to the store. Have coupons ready and bring recyclable shopping bags. If you know you’re going to make a specific dish, print out the recipe and bring it with you.

2. Don’t go to the store hungry.

If you’re starving before you get there, you’re more likely to spend money on things you don’t need but would just like to have.

     3. Spend the most time in the produce section. Choose a rainbow of colorful vegetables and fruits. Each color reflects a different vitamin, mineral and phytonutrient.

4. Meat and dairy are not necessarily bad. Choose hormone free meat and watch your portion sizes.

5. Choose to buy canned or dried foods. Keeping a variety of canned vegetables or beans can help make last-minute salads, soups, pasta or rice dishes. Not butters are also great to have in the pantry. Watch the salt content!

Happy shopping! What are your favorite supermarket items?
